Carrier Furnace Ignitor Not Glowing

This is typically the problem if you can hear your furnace click on but it does not fire up.

Turn the furnace off using the thermostat. Furnace ignitor doesn t glow when the stat calls for heat the blower runs for a while then shuts down then the inducer runs for a while then shuts down at no time does the ignitor glow. Turn the furnace off and leave the house. Also all of your limit controls and other safety devices must be closed a closed circuit between the two connections to allow the furnace ignitor to glow and start the ignition process.

Like many gas furnaces our furnace uses this hot surface ignitor it lights up like a glow plug every time the burner needs to light so it cycles hot cold thousands of times. You might smell some gas. The pilot light or ignition sensor is usually the most common issue when your furnace will not ignite. The goodman furnace may not be receiving an adequate gas supply if the glow ignitor turns on but the furnace cannot ignite.

Here are a few steps to check your ignitor and determine if it needs to be replaced. Turn off the furnace. It eventually cracks and burns out like a burnt out light bulb. A technician told us he changes these all the time.

Find the gas supply valve next to or behind the furnace and rotate the valve to the open position typically by twisting counterclockwise. A faulty or dirty ignition or sensor is a relatively easy fix so follow these steps and you may be able to solve the problem yourself. The ignitor did not glow the flame sensor a small metal probe about 1 8 in diameter with a white porcelain base does not sense the flame so after 8 to 10 seconds the hissing sounds stops with no ignition of gas to heat your home. I put a meter on the wires going to the ignitor and found no power during the start up sequence. In order to check the ignitor by testing the circuit and inspecting the furnace for visual damage the furnace must be set at room temperature. Stop immediately if you smell gas.
