Can You Put Self Leveling Compound Over Tiles

Hi there i want to lay floorboards over underlay which is over vinyl tiles these in turn lie over concrete.

Can you put self leveling compound over tiles.

The amount of time that you need to wait when working with a self leveling compound once it is poured before you can lay a ceramic tile floor depends on the product that you are working with. In fact the challenge is identical. You want the floor leveling compound to just fill the recessed area and not be higher. Self leveling compounds can also remain glued on tools like the trowel and the bucket.

If it ends up higher you now have created a hump. Applying floor leveling compound is not much different than applying drywall compound over recessed seams. It can be confusing because many leveling compounds are marked as useable on a variety of surfaces including linoleum and vinyl. You can apply self leveling compound directly to hardibacker cement board or any other approved tile setting materials.

Wear work gloves safety goggles and a particle mask when mixing and applying the compound to avoid skin eye and lung contact. The drywall knives are perfect tools as well. Ceramic floor tiles however can be used 24 hours after the self leveling compound was put on the subfloor. To properly install a new tile surface you should remove the existing vinyl tile grind down as much of the old tile adhesive as possible and then apply the leveling compound to smooth out the surface for the new tile.

Another issue is that kitchen units have been moved around and the layout of the kitchen changed so there are some areas that are lower now where the old kitchen units used to be placed the compound was not poured in these places so they are 1 or 2mm lower. If you are applying the self leveling compound to a concrete floor then it is important for the concrete floor to be totally clean and free of dirt and debris.
